E-Mobility revolution in Amsterdam

Amsterdam AFIF

On 10 April, CINEA visited Amsterdam for the final mission of the ‘Zero Emission Buses for public transport in Amsterdam’ project, funded by CEF transport. Completed in December 2024, the project deployed 128 zero-emission buses and 160 charging points at various key locations throughout the city.

The project supported Amsterdam in achieving the goals outlined in its ‘Roadmap Amsterdam Climate Neutral 2050’. Key objectives include transforming the city’s streets to be free of exhaust-emitting vehicles by 2030, transitioning every home from natural gas to sustainable heating solutions by around 2040, and ending the city’s reliance on coal, gas, and oil by 2050.

In terms of transport, 2025 will mark the time when all newly registered vehicles will be required to have zero-emission engines. The 128 buses funded by CEF are integral to this comprehensive strategy, envisioning a future where residents can seamlessly commute from home to work and back using only electric-powered vehicles, whether by boat, bus, or tram.

An increasing number of citizens are choosing to cycle or use public transport, with 70% of personal journeys to, from, and within Amsterdam now being made by walking, cycling, or using public transport—making them sustainable choices. In the city, these options are considered both smart and healthy.

The project demonstrated that a city like Amsterdam can serve as a living laboratory for testing various innovative solutions. It also highlighted the crucial role of partnerships between public transport operators, the city, and relevant industry stakeholders in achieving these targets.
