Innovative Solutions for Plastic-Free European Rivers

The EU-funded INSPIRE project is putting forward a holistic approach to tackle plastic pollution in European rivers, combining research, innovation, and citizen participation to reduce plastic waste.

Project spotlight: INSPIRE

Following International Plastic Free Day on 25 May, the Horizon Europe-funded INSPIRE project is stepping up efforts to combat plastic pollution in Europe's rivers, major pathways for the vast amounts of plastic that reach our oceans each year. An estimated 75 to 199 million tonnes of plastic are already in the ocean, and the number continues to rise (UNEP 2021).

Launched in May 2023, INSPIRE brings together 26 partners across academia, industry, and civil society to develop and implement 20 innovative technologies and actions focused on detecting, collecting, and preventing plastic waste in freshwater systems.

Rivers are critical conduits for plastic waste, transporting debris from inland regions to the sea and oceans. INSPIRE addresses this challenge through  eight use cases from six rivers across Europe, including the Scheldt River in Belgium, the Po River in Italy, and the Danube River in Romania. These sites serve as testing grounds for advanced solutions such as drone-based monitoring, AI-driven image analysis, and biodegradable materials designed to replace single-use plastics.

One recent notable achievement includes the deployment of Belgium's first smart EcoBin in Temse, equipped with sensors to monitor waste levels and optimise collection routes. Additionally, the project utilises the JRC Floating Litter Monitoring App, enabling citizens to report plastic waste sightings using their smartphones, thereby fostering citizen engagement and data collection.

INSPIRE's participation in the European Maritime Day in Cork, at the CINEA stand, underscores its commitment to collaborative efforts in restoring our oceans and waters by 2030. By integrating technological innovation with citizen involvement, INSPIRE exemplifies a comprehensive strategy to achieve plastic-free rivers and, ultimately, a healthier marine environment.
